Pet food bank busier than ever
BY DEBBIE ROBERTS, CORRESPONDENT

SOUTH DAYTONA -- When it comes to keeping their cats and dogs fed and healthy, pet owners in need of assistance are benefiting from an
increase in donations.
Organizers of Sophie's Circle, a pet food bank at 933 Beville Road, Suite 1023, say distribution days are busier than ever following recent news
reports about the non-profit's urgent need for help.
"The reaction was very powerful," said founder Kathy Blackman of Port Orange. "Within a day's time, we were swamped with calls from people
who are trying to keep their pet families intact."
Started in April with the sole purpose of helping pet owners keep their animals during tough times, the number of people seeking assistance has
recently more than doubled to about 250 families per day, Blackman said.
Sophie's Circle is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday. These days, pet owners arrive long before Blackman and Christi Sharp, the
executive director, crank open the warehouse door.
Raising the awareness level about the pet food bank has also spurred a rise in donations, with concerned citizens dropping off checks, pet food
-- both canned and dry -- and other useful items.
The contributions are extremely valuable on distribution days but provisions dwindle quickly as pet owners seeking assistance visit throughout
the day, Blackman said.
"When we left last week, we only had 20 pounds of cat food left and no cat litter, so we were running low on that again," said Blackman. "Every
week is a struggle, but we won't stop being there for those who need help."
Job layoffs and income reductions are among some of the reasons cited by people who are turning to Sophie's Circle rather than giving up their
beloved pets to other homes or the local humane society, said Sharp, who also lives in Port Orange.
With assistance coming in from a variety of sources, including local churches and Girl Scout troops, Sharp said she hopes interest in Sophie's
Circle will remain strong. "We can't thank people enough, because without their contributions and support we wouldn't be able to help pet
owners in the community that are in need," she said.
Blackman and Sharp are considering the addition of a distribution facility in West Volusia because of the number of people who have been
making the drive to South Daytona for pet support.
Currently the only pet food bank in Volusia County, items distributed through Sophie's Circle are obtained through fundraising efforts, local
veterinarians and pet store businesses, and from individual donations.

'Howl-o-Ween' spirit for event
BY DEBBIE ROBERTS, CORRESPONDENT

Costumed canines paraded as pumpkins, pirates, skeletons, a ladybug and even a skunk during a "Howl-o-Ween" contest at a local store.
With 18 pooches howling to be noticed, judges had the bewitching task of choosing only one winner in five different categories.
Hosted by Sophie's Circle, a pet food bank in South Daytona, the Oct. 14 event took place at the Neighbor's General Store in Port Orange.
"We were thrilled with the number of people who registered for the contest," said Christi Sharp, executive director of Sophie's Circle. "It was
spectacular to see all the creativity. People obviously took a lot of time to think out the costumes."
A prize package that included organic dog treats, coupons donated by local businesses and a $10 gift certificate from the Neighbor's General
Store was presented to each of the winners.
The "Howl-o-Ween" costume contest was organized as a fun activity for Volusia County pet owners, and the canines were treated to a small
container of ice cream complete with a dog biscuit.
Sharp said she and Sophie's Circle founder, Kathy Blackman,
appreciated the support from Neighbor's General Store
owners Michelle and Carl Zimmerman of Port Orange.
"They also are one of our sponsors, so we're very grateful for their support," said Sharp. "Having the event at their store created a real family
atmosphere and we got nothing but positive feedback; everyone enjoyed the evening."
Sophie's Circle, 933 Beville Road, Suite 1023, in South Daytona is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday to distribute free dog and cat
food to pet owners in need.

Pet-food bank plans west branch
By MARK HARPER, Staff Writer

A South Daytona nonprofit that distributes free food to needy families with dogs, cats and other creatures is now setting
up a pet food bank on Volusia County's west side.
Sophie's Circle will open the pet food bank at 125 W. Ohio Ave., Orange City, next month. The organization is planning
a grand opening/stock-the-pantry party from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 1.
No date has been set for pet-food distribution, although it will likely be one Saturday a month to start, said Christi
Sharp, executive director of Sophie's Circle.
The need for free pet food was seen on the county's west side.
"I get calls all the time from people who say, 'It's too far to drive to Daytona. Can someone bring us food here?' " Sharp
said.
At the same time, an employee of the Main Street Community Bank, Bob Barnes, had learned of the need and knew of
a building the bank was holding after a foreclosure.
"We have this property, and he thought it could work," said Kathy Crosby, the bank's marketing manager. "He's a pet
lover, which a lot of our people are. We thought being a community bank, we could help the community in these tough
times."
The bank has donated the building to Sophie's Circle as long as it is unoccupied, Crosby said. The building is for sale.
Sophie's Circle has registered 443 families since Jan. 1, providing food to 603 dogs and 862 cats, Sharp said.
In an average week, the organization provides food, treats and cat litter to nearly 100 families.
