Pet-food bank plans west branch

A South Daytona nonprofit that distributes free food to needy families with dogs, cats and other creatures is now setting up a pet food bank on Volusia County's west side.
Sophie's Circle will open the pet food bank at 125 W. Ohio Ave., Orange City, next month. The organization is planning a grand opening/stock-the-pantry party from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 1.
No date has been set for pet-food distribution, although it will likely be one Saturday a month to start, said Christi Sharp, executive director of Sophie's Circle.
The need for free pet food was seen on the county's west side.
"I get calls all the time from people who say, 'It's too far to drive to Daytona. Can someone bring us food here?' " Sharp said.
At the same time, an employee of the Main Street Community Bank, Bob Barnes, had learned of the need and knew of a building the bank was holding after a foreclosure.
"We have this property, and he thought it could work," said Kathy Crosby, the bank's marketing manager. "He's a pet lover, which a lot of our people are. We thought being a community bank, we could help the community in these tough times."
The bank has donated the building to Sophie's Circle as long as it is unoccupied, Crosby said. The building is for sale.
Sophie's Circle has registered 443 families since Jan. 1, providing food to 603 dogs and 862 cats, Sharp said.
In an average week, the organization provides food, treats and cat litter to nearly 100 families.
